Delta Air Lines plans to expand service out of LaGuardia Airport in New York. The carrier plans to add more than 100 flights to 29 destinations, increasing its total flights by more than 60%. Delta also plans to fly to hubs of other carriers such as Miami, Houston and Denver.

·  Southwest Will Remove XM Satellite Radio From AirTran Flights

 

AirTran Airways flights will no longer feature XM satellite radio. Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran this year, and Southwest decided to remove the radio equipment to lower the weight of planes and decrease fuel costs. The radio equipment will be removed from all AirTran aircraft by the end of February.

·  United Continental Will Steam Ahead In 2012 With Merger

 

United Continental will continue to make progress in 2012 on its merger. The carrier plans to unite its computer reservation systems next year and create labor contracts with multiple unions. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we're moving along and making great progress," said United Executive Vice President Jim Compton. "From a customer point of view, I know it will be better.

·  American Eagle Will Trim Flight Schedule, Return Turboprops

 

American Eagle has announced plans to trim flights and return 21 turboprops to lessors. AMR Corp., the parent company of American Eagle and American Airlines, filed for bankruptcy in November. "The restructuring process to shape American Eagle into a more competitive and successful company is both complex and challenging," American Eagle President and CEO Dan Garton said.

·  United Launches Internet Site To Answer Merger Questions

 

United Airlines has unveiled UnitedHub.com to answer questions about the carrier's merger with Continental Airlines. The website provides information about the two airlines, a Twitter and Facebook feed and videos about the merger.

·  US Airways-American Merger Is Possible, Ex-Airline CEO Says

 

Gordon Bethune, the former CEO of Continental Airlines, says a merger between US Airways and American Airlines is likely to be on the horizon. Bethune, who serves on several corporate boards, made the prediction while a guest on CNBC.

US Airways will beef up its Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport presence in March with 14 new daily flights. "We are excited to expand our service to customers traveling to and from our nation's capital as well as increase jobs at Washington National Airport," US Airways CEO Doug Parker said.

·  PreCheck Will Expand To NYC's JFK Airport

 

The federal PreCheck program that allows frequent fliers who provide personal data to speed through airport security will expand to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport this year. The program, which is limited to frequent fliers with American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines, will also expand to airports in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is in place in airports in Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and Detroit.

·  EU Emissions Scheme Prompting Higher Airfares

 

Several industry watchers pinned last week's widely adopted $6 roundtrip transatlantic fare increase on the European Union's new Emissions Trading Scheme. If analyst expectations come to pass, the airlines have only just begun. While the ETS program's expense for individual airlines varies greatly, OAG in an analysis released this week estimated that carriers would need to bump up fares by 3 percent on average to counter the new cost item. As such, OAG predicted "a significant proportion of ETS costs" would be passed on to air passengers.
