Detroit Tops Airport Satisfaction Study

A new report shows which North American airports seem to make the experience painless and which can add to the frustration. The study, conducted by J.D. Power and Associates, surveyed more than 12,000 people who took a round-trip flight between January and December 2009. They were asked to grade their departing and arriving airports on categories like accessibility, the check-in experience, the security process, the level of comfort in the terminal, the food choices offered and baggage claim.

·  Amtrak Is Launching Wireless Internet Service

 

Providing passengers what they've been seeking, Amtrak is launching wireless Internet service, or Wi-Fi, on all Acela Express trains and in most major stations along the Northeast Corridor, effective March 1, 2010. The wireless Internet service is expected to increase demand for Acela Express service. Amtrak passengers will be able to use any laptop or any other portable device that is Wi-Fi enabled. This technological enhancement will allow customers to utilize the web as they travel on their Amtrak journey.

·  U.S. Airline, Union Disputes Could Disrupt Flights

 

Air travelers in the USA could face the same type of labor relations-driven flight disruptions that crippled air travel in parts of Europe last week. American, Continental, United, US Airways and Southwest are in prolonged contract talks with various unions.

·  Continental To Charge Economy Passengers For More Space

 

Passengers who fly Continental Airlines will be given the choice starting March 17 to pay more for seats with additional legroom. The price of the extra space, which could be as much as 31 inches on larger planes, will vary depending on length of flight, date and time of flight and other factors, according to Julie King, a representative for Continental

·  Forcing Airlines To Play Nice With Fliers

 

New government rules go into effect next month that will heavily penalize airlines for leaving passengers stranded aboard grounded planes for more than three hours, require airlines to respond "substantively" to customer complaints within 60 days, and force airlines to publish data about delayed flights and face fines for habitually late flights.

·  Southwest Checks Out Laguardia And National

 

Southwest is eyeing slots at New York LaGuardia and Washington Reagan National airports. Two Southwest executives recently questioned the mechanics of slot sales that would be required as a condition to the Transportation Department's approval of a proposed deal between Delta and US Airways, according to a report filed with the department.

·  DHS Unveils List Of Airports For Full-Body Scanners

 

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on Friday revealed the list of 11 U.S. airports that will be the first to receive full-body scanners purchased under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Transportation Security Administration will install 450 of the machines this year, boosting nationwide deployment by more than 10 times.

·  Napolitano: No Imminent Change In Airport Shoe Removal

 

Don't expect to keep your shoes on at the airport any time soon. That was the message from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during a teleconference on aviation security. She said current technology does not allow for adequate screening of passengers in shoes, though that could change eventually. Napolitano also defended the use of full- body scanners and random hand swabs at airports.
